An Easier Path to Federal xAPI Implementation: SQL LRS granted Certification to Field on Platform One

xAPI implementation has become even easier for U.S. Federal Government stakeholders.

A Certification to Field (CtF) has been granted for SQL LRS on USAF’s Platform One.

SQL LRS is Yet’s open source xAPI Learning Record Store (LRS). It is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license. The CtF includes the integration of LRSPipe, Yet’s open source data forwarder powered by xAPI Profiles.

The Certification to Field demonstrates that SQL LRS’s Iron Bank containers on Platform One are secure and may be deployed within the Platform One IL2 and IL4 environments. Because many organizations in the U.S. Federal Government have reciprocity with Platform One’s Iron Bank, deployment of SQL LRS is now greatly simplified for government installs.

About xAPI and SQL LRS

The xAPI data specification (recently standardized as IEEE 9274.1.1) is the model for the capture and communication of learning activity data as recommended by DODI 1322.26. The deployment of a Learning Record Store is a requirement for any xAPI implementation. The open source SQL LRS provides xAPI data validation in addition to the ability to store, access, and retrieve valid xAPI data. One or more instances of SQL LRS may be implemented in a federated environment to fulfill the standards-based data management objectives of the Total Learning Architecture. And unlike other Learning Record Stores, SQL LRS can be programmed using the “Reactions” product feature to implement conditional logic whereby SQL LRS can assert new xAPI data within the LRS based on the patterns of xAPI data that it receives – essentially opening up an expanding universe of data automation and business logic capabilities.

What is a Certification to Field?

A Certification to Field is an evaluation of vulnerabilities inherent to a software product. In other words, it assesses risk. In the Federal Government, it is up to an authorizing officer and program managers to consider this assessment in assuming the responsibility for implementing software on a specific system under a current Authority to Operate (ATO). In considering a new ATO, the CtF should be included in the body of evidence considered under the Risk Management Framework.

The new Certification to Field for SQL LRS ensures customers that the software is secure for use on Platform One in IL2 and IL4 environments. Customers who seek to deploy SQL LRS to other platforms and environments, including at higher security levels, can use the CtF as evidence in making the case for a new ATO or for including SQL LRS under an existing ATO.

Continuous Authority to Operate

For those customers who seek to leverage existing Platform One resources, the open source SQL LRS is available in the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative’s DoD Learning Enclave under a Continuous Authority to Operate (cATO).

“The ADL Initiative, in collaboration with DoD stakeholders, is establishing a DoD Learning Enclave (DLE) as part of the Enterprise Digital Learning Modernization (EDLM) effort. The DLE is the cloud-based hub that provides the shared software services required to implement a given instantiation of the Total Learning Architecture (TLA), a framework that defines a uniform approach for integrating current and emerging learning technologies into a learning services ecosystem.” — cited from ADL
